Special Issue Introduction

The main goal of wastewater-based epidemiology is to inform our understanding of population-scale use, consumption, or exposure of chemical or biological agents. The large population coverage and the frequency at which wastewater-based epidemiology can be conducted make it an attractive approach for assessing changes in use, consumption or exposure. As such, this approach has been adopted as an illicit drug surveillance strategy in many countries and recently for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks within communities. However, wastewater-based epidemiology is relatively underexplored for many other potential applications, such as assessing exposure to industrial chemicals, antibiotic resistance, infectious diseases other than Covid-19 and pathogens.

This Special Issue, Wastewater-based Epidemiology: the Present and Future, will focus on novel applications of wastewater-based epidemiology and methodological developments, which either expand the potential or help us better understand or reduce the limitations. Potential topics include:
● Current state of wastewater-based epidemiology for monitoring illicit drug consumption
● Wastewater-based epidemiology for SARS-CoV-2 and lessons for future pandemic monitoring
● Analytical and methodological advances in wastewater-based epidemiology
● Novel applications of wastewater-based epidemiology

We also welcome submissions on any other topics relevant to wastewater-based epidemiology. We cordially invite all scientists in these fields to submit your articles (i.e., original research papers, review articles, commentaries, and editorials) for publication in this Special Issue.

All submissions MUST consider the implications for human and/or wildlife exposure to contaminants. Please see the Aims and Scope of JEEA for further guidance.
