Topic: Programmed Cell Death in Cancer: Mechanisms and Functional Implications

Programmed cell death (PCD), including apoptosis, pyroptosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, and autophagy, plays a key role in maintaining cell cycle and tissue homeostasis by eliminating damaged, infected, or malignant cells. An essential objective in cancer treatment is the promotion of cancer cell elimination through PCD, achievable via intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. The development of effective PCD-inducing agents necessitates studies in drug discovery and tumor biology, because these therapeutics can trigger cell death but may encounter resistance, leading to treatment failure. While a few PCD-inducing agents have gained FDA approval, many other promising therapeutics remain under investigation.

In this Special Issue, we will present cutting-edge studies focusing on various aspects of PCD in cancer, including mechanisms, clinical translational research, safety and efficacy of potential PCD-inducing therapeutics, and tumor biology related to PCD.

This Special Issue will feature 20-30 original articles or reviews covering diverse topics. Potential areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. The underlying mechanisms of PCD in cancer initiation and progression;
2. The exploration of PCD-inducing therapeutics in cancer and their mechanisms;
3. Resistance mechanisms to PCD-inducing agents and strategies for prevention and reversal;
4. Safety and efficacy of PCD-inducing therapeutics, both in pre-clinical and clinical settings.
