Cover Picture: Fatty liver disease is a heterogenous disorder with different metabolic and genetic factors. Therefore, NAFLD diagnosis is based on the exclusion of other concomitant liver diseases, which does not accurately reflect the pathogenesis of this disease. On the other hand, MAFLD avoids the dichotomous view of non-alcoholic fatty liver and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis since it is based on positive criteria instead of negative criteria. Furthermore, this allows concomitant liver disease due to causes other than MAFLD and is called dual etiology, which was not possible under the previous definition of NAFLD.
