Special Topic Introduction
Bioprinting has emerged as a powerful biofabrication technology for engineering living tissues, organs, and advanced biomedical systems, enabling the precise spatial organization of cells, biomaterials, and biological components. Advances in printing technologies, bioinks, biomaterials, and multimaterial fabrication have enabled the creation of increasingly complex and functional constructs, expanding the potential of bioprinting in tissue regeneration, disease modeling, drug discovery, and personalized medicine. As the field progresses beyond proof-of-concept studies, increasing efforts are being directed toward developing functional tissues and organs that can meet the demands of real-world biomedical applications. Despite these advances, significant challenges remain in translating laboratory-scale innovations into reliable, scalable, and clinically or industrially relevant solutions. Key challenges include achieving tissue maturation and long-term functionality, ensuring manufacturing reproducibility, and establishing robust standards and quality-control processes.
This Special Issue, “Translational Bioprinting for Engineered Tissues, Organs, and Biomedical Applications,” aims to highlight innovative strategies that bridge advances in bioprinting with practical biomedical applications. It welcomes interdisciplinary research spanning bioprinting technologies, bioinks and biomaterials, engineered tissues and organs, intelligent and automated biomanufacturing, and translational approaches, with particular emphasis on functional performance, scalability, reproducibility, and clinical or industrial translation.
Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
● Advanced bioprinting technologies, including extrusion-, light-, inkjet-, volumetric-, and multimodal bioprinting;
● Bioinks, biomaterials, and biofabrication, focusing on cell-laden materials, tissue formation, and functional constructs;
● Engineered tissues, organs, and organoid models for regenerative medicine, disease modeling, drug discovery, and precision medicine;
● Intelligent and automated bioprinting, including AI-assisted design, process optimization, and advanced fabrication strategies;
● Scalable biomanufacturing and industrial applications, including scale-up, standardization, reproducibility, and quality control;
● Clinical translation and biomedical applications, with an emphasis on engineering–medicine collaboration and the translation of bioprinting technologies into practical applications.
