Special Topic Introduction

Flexible/stretchable materials and devices have become a cornerstone of next-generation wearable electronics. By overcoming the limitations of traditional rigid components, these technologies enable conformal and dynamic integration with human skin, clothing, and biological tissues. Recent breakthroughs in material synthesis, structural design, and precision manufacturing have significantly enhanced mechanical deformability, electrical stability, biocompatibility, and multifunctional integration, paving the way for transformative advancements in personalized healthcare, smart textiles, human-machine interaction, and portable energy systems. These developments are redefining wearable technologies from passive accessories into active, bioconformal platforms capable of real-time sensing, data processing, and responsive actuation under complex physiological motion.

This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that advance fundamental understanding, material design, device engineering, and practical applications of flexible/stretchable materials and devices for wearable electronics. We invite submissions that push the boundaries of performance, durability, scalability, and clinical/industrial translation.

Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Novel flexible/stretchable materials (organic, inorganic, hybrid, and bio-based systems) with tailored electrical, mechanical, and biological properties;

● Structural design strategies (e.g., origami-inspired and porous structures) to enhancestretchability, flexibility, and mechanical robustness;

● Interface engineering and multi-component integration to optimize device performance under mechanical deformation;

● Advanced fabrication technologies for high-precision, large-scale, and cost-effectiveflexible/stretchable devices;

● Mechanistic studies and modeling of thermo-mechano-electrical coupling behavior;

● Wearable applications in biosensing, drug delivery, energy harvesting, soft robotics, and smart healthcare monitoring;

● Wearable systems for rehabilitation, assistive technologies, and human-machine interfaces, including motion tracking and feedback-enabled devices;

● Soft neural interfaces and wearable electrophysiological systems for high-fidelity biological signal recording and electrical stimulation;

● Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-enabled wearable electronics for automated fabrication, intelligent data acquisition, signal processing, and clinical analysis and diagnosis.
