Special Issue Introduction

Metabolic neuropathy encompasses a wide spectrum of peripheral nerve disorders with the common factor of being associated with systemic disease of metabolic disorders. The most commonly known entity is diabetic peripheral neuropathy and other disorders that lead to metabolic neuropathies include, but are not limited, to uraemia, polycythaemias hypothyroidism, amyloidosis, acromegaly, nutritional and vitamin deficiencies and liver failure. There is considerable overlap in many of these conditions thus a multi-factorial approach to the management paradigms may be required.

With the rise of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity, there is the increase in metabolic neuropathies and the consequences of decreased quality of life, increased morbidity and mortality.  Despite numerous studies into the pathogenesis and management of metabolic neuropathies there is still debate on the diagnosis with no FDA approved therapies for the treatment. Further work is needed to develop a greater understanding of the pathophysiology so that this can be diagnosed and managed appropriately. Furthermore there is the need for a surrogate marker for peripheral neuropathy so that the diagnosis is made in a timely manner with a more universal diagnostic criteria.

For this Special Issue we invite novel research (basic science or translational studies) and reviews articles to contribute to a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and  clinical management of metabolic neuropathies.
