Special Issue Introduction

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, is a multisystem disease associated with hepatic and extrahepatic complications. NAFLD is strongly associated with an increased risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events. No standardized pharmacotherapy against NAFLD is available and several ongoing clinical trials are exploring new drugs. The Special Issue aims to highlight the most recent advances in the diagnosis and management of NAFLD. Potential topics to be discussed in this issue include new developments in:

● Disease definition;

● Pathogenesis;

● Diagnosis and risk stratification;

● Anti-inflammatory, anti-metabolic, and anti-fibrotic therapies;

● Non-invasive markers of treatment efficacy;

● Management of lean vs. obese NAFLD.
