Special Topic Introduction
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of OAE Publishing Inc., the Editorial Office of Metabolism and Target Organ Damage (M&TOD) organized the M&TOD Global Forum, held virtually from October 19 to 24, 2025. This international symposium brought together distinguished experts from around the world to share emerging insights and future perspectives on metabolic dysfunction and its impact on target organ damage.
Renowned speakers included Prof. Christopher D. Byrne (University of Southampton, UK), Prof. Jean-François Dufour (University of Bern, Switzerland), Prof. Jacob George (University of Sydney, Australia), Prof. Lilach O. Lerman (Mayo Clinic, USA), Prof. Amedeo Lonardo (University of Modena, Italy), Prof. Youfei Guan (Dalian Medical University, China), Prof. Minghua Zheng (The First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, China), Prof. Jiangao Fan (Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China), Prof. Yan Chen (Chinese Academy of Sciences, China), and Prof. Jin Chai (Army Medical University, China).
Their lectures covered a wide spectrum of cutting-edge topics, including the multisystem nature of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), sex-related differences in metabolic liver disease, novel therapeutic targets such as HSD17B13, and new pharmacological agents for MASLD treatment. The speakers also addressed precision subtyping of MASLD, lactate shuttle regulation in glucose homeostasis, updates to the Chinese guidelines for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) 2025, and public health policies for metabolic-associated liver diseases. Collectively, these presentations reflected the rapid evolution of research on the mechanisms underlying metabolic dysfunction, organ-specific injury, and clinical management strategies.
The forum provided a valuable platform for dynamic exchange among leading scientists and clinicians, emphasizing the interconnected molecular, cellular, and systemic pathways linking metabolic disorders to cardiovascular, renal, and hepatic damage. It also underscored the journal’s mission to foster open scientific communication and promote interdisciplinary collaboration in metabolic research.
This Commemorative Special Issue, entitled “Metabolic Dysfunction and Target Organ Damage — Emerging Insights and Future Perspectives,” features Perspective and Review Articles inspired by the symposium presentations, as well as other high-quality contributions addressing the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of metabolic diseases. Together, these articles celebrate a decade of OAE’s commitment to advancing excellence in open-access publishing and deepening our understanding of metabolic dysfunction and its systemic consequences.
