Special Topic Introduction

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and represents a growing global health crisis due to its steadily increasing incidence. Its development is influenced by multiple risk factors, including genetic predisposition, lifestyle habits, obesity, and environmental conditions. Moreover, T2DM is often associated with various complications that further exacerbate its burden, including cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, liver disease, neuropathy, and retinopathy. Understanding the mechanistic links between these epidemiological risk factors and the onset and progression of T2DM and its complications is essential for effective prevention, early detection, and management.

This Special Issue aims to address these knowledge gaps by gathering research that explores the multifactorial nature of T2DM and its complications. Topics will span the latest findings on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors driving T2DM, as well as innovative approaches to preventing and mitigating its complications. We invite high-quality contributions from diverse disciplines, including epidemiology, molecular biology, clinical research, and public health.

Objectives:

● To elucidate the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contributing to T2DM development;

● To investigate the mechanisms linking T2DM to its most common complications, including cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, liver disease, neuropathy, and retinopathy;

● To examine the influence of socioeconomic, cultural, and healthcare access factors on T2DM prevalence and outcomes globally;

● To explore preventive measures, novel biomarkers, therapeutic strategies, and approaches for early detection and prompt management of T2DM and its complications;

● To foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, clinicians, patients, healthcare providers, and public health experts in advancing the prevention, treatment, and management of T2DM and its complications;

● To evaluate public health policies and interventions addressing the rising global burden of T2DM and its complications.

Key topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Genetic and environmental risk factors for T2DM development and progression;

● Influence of obesity, physical activity, sedentary behavior, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and dietary patterns on T2DM and its complications;

● Mechanistic links between T2DM and cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, liver disease, neuropathy, and retinopathy;

● Impact of socioeconomic and cultural factors on T2DM prevalence and management;

● Advances in early detection, biomarkers, and therapeutic strategies for T2DM and its complications;

● Public health strategies to reduce the burden of T2DM and its complications;

● Prediction models for T2DM and its complications;

● Effects of interventions targeting glucose homeostasis on disease outcomes.

We welcome original research articles, reviews, commentaries on recent publications in leading diabetes journals, and clinical perspective articles that provide valuable insights into the prevention, management, and therapeutic innovations for T2DM and related complications.
