Special Issue Introduction

In recent years, the remarkable emergence of two-dimensional (2D) functional materials has sparked unprecedented enthusiasm in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials, and biology. Since 2004, the family of 2D materials has expanded rapidly, encompassing a diverse array of properties and functionalities that hold immense potential for transformative technological applications. As the quest for novel materials to drive the next generation of electronics, optoelectronics, energy storage, and catalysis intensifies, the spotlight now shines brightly on this burgeoning class of materials.

This Special Issue serves as a platform to showcase the momentous advancements achieved in the realm of 2D functional materials and provides a platform for showcasing cutting-edge research that explores their diverse applications. These materials are characterized by their atomically thin nature, where strong covalent bonds within the plane are coupled with unique properties arising from quantum confinement and surface effects. Consequently, they offer unprecedented opportunities to engineer and manipulate material behaviors at the nanoscale. In this Special Issue, we gather contributions from leading researchers in the field, encompassing both experimental investigations and theoretical explorations. The research articles presented here cover a broad spectrum of topics, including the design, synthesis, and characterization of 2D functional materials, as well as their innovative applications in diverse areas such as field-effect transistors, optoelectronics, photovoltaics, catalysis, and spintronics. Moreover, the Special Issue delves into the emerging field of 2D magnets and 2D ferroelectrics, the areas garnering significant attention for their potential in spintronics and quantum computing. Authors are welcome to submit original research articles, reviews, and mini-reviews. The research topic includes (but is not limited to):
● Design strategies of 2D functional materials and their relevant structural-functional relationships;
● Advanced synthesis of 2D functional materials with novel structural and electronic properties;
● Advanced characterizations of 2D functional materials;
● Experimental and theoretical investigations on 2D functional materials; 
● Development of advanced applications based on 2D functional materials.
