Some members of the human gut microbiota can encode either generalist single glycoside hydrolases that are able to metabolize some disaccharides and phenolic glycosides or combinations of specialized glycosyl hydrolases dedicated to specific phenolic glycosides. The functionalization of specific aglycones released by certain strains of Bacteroides uniformis mediates health effects in animal models.
