The abbreviations denote the standard meteorological seasons: DJF (winter in the Northern Hemisphere), MAM (spring), JJA (summer), and SON (autumn). The emission maps are calculated by averaging monthly values over the available period (1980-2010) and are scaled so that total global emissions are 2.7 Gg Se·yr^-1.
