Figure10

A method for quantifying the upfront carbon footprint of urban densification in Texas through 2050

Figure 10. Foregone potential for carbon sequestration through 2050 by scenario and natural land type. Aggregate values represent the predicted accumulation of sequestered $$ \mathrm{{CO}_2} $$ if no new natural land was converted into developed land. Foregone carbon sequestration decreases proportional to increasing urban densification as less natural land is developed and more carbon stock sites continue to sequester carbon. While still significant in the long term, foregone potential for carbon sequestration only makes up approximately 6%-14% of the total built environment upfront carbon impact through 2050. Values are rounded; see Supplementary Table 12 for full precision.
