Abstract

Carbon materials offer a unique combination of physicochemical properties that make them suitable for a wide range of applications. They can exhibit high electrical conductivity, well‑developed porosity with large apparent surface areas, and surface chemistry that can be tailored to specific needs. Their low cost is also a key advantage for industrial use. As a result, carbon materials are employed extensively in applications such as potable water treatment and serve as essential components in electrochemical devices including supercapacitors and fuel cells. They are available in a broad variety of morphologies (powders, fibres, cloths, monoliths, etc.), enabling their integration into diverse technologies. This webinar will focus on the synthesis of porous carbons. We will briefly introduce the main preparation methods, from conventional approaches to some of the most recent technologies. Finally, the importance of porosity design in optimizing the performance of porous carbons will be illustrated through a case study involving hydrogen storage.
