Cover Picture: When it comes to an outbreak of an infectious disease, with e.g. the Zika virus, it is important to recognize it and react quickly. Usually, reported cases of infectious disease from medical records are used for surveillance. But in times of higher mobile device usage and better internet penetration, internet search terms could provide information on current interests of the community. The review collects studies on the use and applicability of internet search queries for infectious disease surveillance in low- to middle-income countries and shows that this type of data is low in costs and timely, but a better understanding is needed on the suitable diseases and settings.
