Unfavorable microglia present in the SNc release neurotoxic proinflammatory mediators while accelerating the degeneration of DA neurons. Favorable microglia present in the SNr and GPi engage in eliminating hyperactive glutamatergic synapses from the STN in the indirect pathway of the basal ganglia.
