Cover Picture: Na-ion batteries are an emerging technology aimed at complementing the currently prominent Li-ion batteries. These new batteries were initially explored in 1970s; however, the major research breakthroughs in them occurred in 2000s and 2010s, resulting in an initial commercialisation of Na-ion batteries by a range of companies (Faradion, Tiamat, CATL, HiNa Batteries and others). With Na-ion batteries entering the real world applications, we are now able to benchmark their characteristics and performance versus more established variants of Li-ion cells. The Research Highlight published in this issue discussed two recent opinions on Na-ion batteries from prominent researchers in the battery field, Prof. K.M. Abraham and Prof. J.-M. Tarascon. The cover picture represents an artistic impression of Na-ion batteries fabricated in two different cell formats.
