Topic: Probiotics, Food Functional Ingredients, and Their Interaction with the Gut Microbiota to Prevent or Treat Diseases

Probiotics (e.g., lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria) and food functional ingredients (e.g., vitamins, phytochemicals, polysaccharides, and bioactive peptides) have been widely demonstrated to prevent or treat many diseases. A noteworthy fact is that many of them can enter the colon to interact with the gut microbiota, a factor pivotal to realizing their health benefits. This Special Issue aims to serves as a dynamic platform for the rapid dissemination of cutting-edge research in this compelling field of leveraging probiotics and food functional ingredients to address human diseases, with an emphasis on their interaction with gut microbiota. 

Authors are invited to submit original research articles, perspectives, and review articles that focus on, but are not limited to:

(1) Understanding the effects, safety, and underlying mechanisms of probiotics and food functional ingredients on different human diseases, emphasizing their regulation of gut microbiota;

(2) Understanding the interaction of probiotics and food functional ingredients with gut microbiota based on in vitro and in vivo models;

(3) Understanding the biotransformation pathways and mechanisms of gut microbiota-mediated metabolism of food functional ingredients, such as phytochemicals and polysaccharides;

(4) Understanding the bioactive gut microbiota metabolites and their health functions of dietary phytochemicals.
