Special Topic Introduction

This Special Topic is published in collaboration with the 2nd International Symposium on Bifidobacterial Biology (ISBB 2026), serving as an official conference special Topic associated with the meeting.

The 2nd International Symposium on Bifidobacterial Biology (ISBB 2026) will be held on September 17–19, 2026 in Parma, Italy. The symposium will highlight recent scientific advances in bifidobacterial research, microorganisms that play a crucial role in maintaining human health and represent key components in the functional food and nutraceutical industries. The programme will cover topics including molecular biology and physiology, ecological dynamics within complex microbial communities, and the health-promoting properties of bifidobacteria, as well as mechanisms underlying probiotic activity, the development and application of prebiotics, and interactions between bifidobacteria and the human host.
