Special Topic Introduction

This special issue aims to assemble a comprehensive and solid collection of articles dedicated to key microbial members of the human gut microbiota. By combining high-quality review papers and original research articles, this special issue will function as a reference “encyclopaedia” of gut microbes, spanning well-characterized taxa as well as emerging or understudied species.

We invite contributions that provide in-depth insights into the taxonomy, physiology, metabolism, ecological roles, and host interactions of individual microbial species or functionally relevant groups. Submissions may also address microbial genomics, metabolomics, and evolutionary aspects, as well as the role of specific microbes in health and disease, including their involvement in metabolic, immune, and neurological processes.

Particular emphasis will be placed for each microbial taxon on:

● Mechanistic understanding of host–microbe interactions;

● Functional characterization of keystone or dominant taxa;

● Strain-level diversity and its biological relevance;

● Microbial consortia and interspecies interactions;

● Translational perspectives, including therapeutic or diagnostic potential.

By bringing together diverse yet focused contributions, this special issue seeks to provide a structured and enduring resource for microbiome scientists, facilitating a deeper understanding of the complexity and functional significance of the human gut microbiota.
