Special Issue Introduction
Emerging pollutants are increasingly detected across diverse environments and pose significant threats to human health, particularly gut health. This Special Issue focuses on the impact of emerging environmental pollutants on the composition and function of the gut microbiota in humans and animals. Pollutants such as antibiotics, heavy metals, microplastics, and endocrine disruptors can disrupt gut microbial ecology, leading to dysbiosis and associated adverse health outcomes. We welcome studies employing clinical samples, epidemiological data, animal models, or zebrafish models to investigate pollutant-induced changes in gut microbial communities, metabolism, and host–microbe interactions.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
● Effects of environmental pollutants on gut microbiota diversity and structure;
● Pollutant-induced gut dysbiosis and its links to metabolic or immune dysfunction;
● Microbial metabolic shifts and biomarker discovery following pollutant exposure;
● Mechanistic studies of host–microbe interactions under environmental stressors;
● Comparative analyses of gut microbiota responses across different models (human, mouse, zebrafish);
● Clinical cohort and epidemiological studies linking pollutant exposure, gut microbiota alterations, and disease risk.
Keywords
Emerging pollutants, gut microbiota, microbiome dysbiosis, host–microbe interaction, epidemiological studies, animal models, zebrafish models
