Special Issue Introduction
Recent advances in microbiome science have revealed the profound roles of live bacterial preparations—including traditional probiotics and next-generation probiotics—in modulating host physiology and contributing to disease prevention and management. This Special Issue of Microbiome Research Reports aims to explore the mechanistic and functional aspects of live microbial interventions across various biological systems.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that address, but are not limited to:
1. Application of omics-based approaches (metagenomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) to elucidate the roles of live bacteria in disease onset and progression;
2. Functional characterization of disease-associated core microbial taxa and their bioactive metabolites, with insights into underlying molecular mechanisms;
3. Development, formulation, and functional evaluation of probiotics and next-generation probiotics, including engineered strains and defined microbial consortia;
4. Exploration of host–microbe and microbe–microbe interactions that shape microbial community functions and influence host responses;
5. Mechanistic insights into the effects of microbial metabolites and surface molecules on immune modulation, metabolism, and homeostasis.
Keywords
Live bacterial preparations, next-generation probiotics, microbiome-based interventions, host–microbe interactions, microbial metabolites
