Special Issue Introduction
The ancient concept of "Food & Medicine Homology" (FMH), deeply rooted in traditional medical systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), posits that certain natural substances possess both nutritional and therapeutic properties. This dual functionality offers a promising framework for preventive healthcare and holistic well-being. However, challenges remain in scientifically validating FMH benefits, elucidating underlying mechanisms, and understanding interactions, particularly with the gut microbiota.
The advent of high-throughput "omics" technologies – including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, microbiomics, and integrated multi-omics – has revolutionized biological research. These powerful tools provide comprehensive, systems-level insights into the molecular composition, biological activity, and physiological effects of complex FMH substances, helping to transform traditional wisdom into evidence-based science.
This Special Issue, titled "The Application of Omics Strategies in Food & Medicine Homology", aims to showcase cutting-edge research leveraging omics approaches to unravel the scientific basis of FMH. We invite contributions on a diverse range of FMH substances - such as herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables, fungi, grains, and marine products - with documented dual-use potential. Studies may employ any omics platform or integrative approaches, spanning in vitro models, animal studies, clinical investigations (observational or interventional), and advanced computational/bioinformatic analyses relevant to FMH.
