Special Topic Introduction
Liver transplantation is undergoing a profound transformation driven by advances in precision medicine and emerging technologies. Beyond traditional surgical innovations, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), machine perfusion, robotic surgery, and transplant oncology is reshaping not just the traditional indications but also every stage of the transplant pathway, from donor organ assessment and recipient selection to surgical execution and long-term outcome prediction.
Machine perfusion technologies have expanded the utilization of marginal donor organs and opened new opportunities for graft assessment and organ reconditioning. Artificial intelligence and machine learning-based predictive models are increasingly supporting clinical decision-making, risk stratification, and personalized transplant management. Robotic platforms continue to advance minimally invasive donor and recipient procedures, while transplant oncology is redefining indications and candidate selection through biomarkers, radiomics, and novel systemic therapies.
Collectively, these innovations are accelerating the transition from traditional transplantation medicine to precision liver transplantation, enabling more individualized, data-driven, and technology-enabled care. This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for original research, reviews, technical reports, and expert perspectives that explore the convergence of these emerging fields and their impact on the future of liver transplantation.
