Special Issue Introduction
Introduction
Minimally invasive techniques have transformed gastrointestinal tumour and bariatric surgery by enabling faster recovery, reducing complications, and improving long-term outcomes. With the rising prevalence of GI tumour- and obesity-related diseases, ongoing surgical optimisation and innovation are essential. Recent progress in laparoscopic, robotic, and endoscopic technologies, along with the adoption of approaches such as fluoroscopic imaging, single-port surgery, and natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, is expanding clinical applications. Metabolic surgery for weight management is also evolving, incorporating minimally invasive approaches such as uniportal surgery, hiatal hernia repair, and gastric diversion stenting. A growing body of evidence supports the effectiveness of these interventions in mitigating obesity-related complications. This Special Issue highlights recent innovations in gastrointestinal oncology and bariatric-metabolic surgery, aiming to shed light on the future direction in minimally invasive practice.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
1. Advances in laparoscopic and robotic techniques for gastrointestinal tumour surgery;
2. Emerging technologies in bariatric and metabolic surgery;
3. Enhanced recovery protocols after gastrointestinal and bariatric procedures;
4. Fluorescence-guided and image-based navigation in gastrointestinal tumour surgery;
5. Endoscopic management of gastrointestinal diseases and bariatric complications;
6. Revisional and complex bariatric surgery: challenges and solutions;
7. Safety, learning curves, and training in minimally invasive gastrointestinal tumour surgery;
8. Long-term outcomes and quality of life after bariatric and metabolic surgery;
9. Innovations in anastomosis, stapling, and suturing techniques;
10. Comparative outcomes of minimally invasive versus open gastrointestinal tumour surgery.
