Special Topic Introduction

Rare earth elements (REEs) are the linchpin of modern technology, playing a critical role in applications ranging from permanent magnets in electric vehicles and wind turbines to advanced electronics and defense systems. Their strategic importance has intensified global competition; however, the development and utilization of REEs are often hindered by complex extraction processes, challenging material properties, and supply chain constraints.

This Special Issue explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the field of rare earth materials. We seek research that leverages machine learning and data-driven approaches to accelerate the discovery of new REEs, optimize their structural and functional properties, and innovate production, processing, and recycling techniques. By bridging AI and materials science, this issue aims to overcome key technological bottlenecks and foster a more efficient and sustainable rare earth industry.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● AI-guided design and discovery of rare earth structural and functional materials

● Machine learning for property prediction and process optimizationof rare earth materials

● AI-enhanced extraction, separation, and recyclingof rare earth elements

● Data informatics for supply chain analysis and lifecycle assessment

Keywords

Rare Earth Materials, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Multi-scale Calculations, Database, Materials Design, Process Optimization, Critical Materials, Sustainable Development
