Special Topic Introduction

Occupational and environmental hazards constitute a major global public health challenge, imposing a persistent burden on workers’ and communities’ physical well-being, health systems, and socioeconomic development worldwide. Despite continuous advances in industrial hygiene, environmental monitoring, safety regulation, and intervention strategies, workers and the general population remain exposed to harmful occupational and environmental hazards, leading to a range of adverse health outcomes that compromise quality of life.

In this Special Issue, we aim to gather high-quality original research, systematic reviews, and perspective articles that advance the understanding of the associations, mechanisms, prevention, and control of occupational and environmental exposures and their associated health risks. It focuses on core occupational risk factors, including dust, silica, and noise, while also welcoming studies on environmental exposures, chemical hazards, and physical agents. Relevant health outcomes include silicosis, respiratory diseases, hearing loss, and cardiovascular disorders. The issue also welcomes research on human biomonitoring, biomarkers of exposure and early biological effects, and genotoxicity, particularly where these approaches contribute to exposure assessment and risk evaluation. Furthermore, it seeks to advance exposure monitoring and assessment technologies, health risk assessment methods, effective protective strategies, and standardized intervention protocols. Contributions on risk communication are also encouraged to support the translation of scientific evidence into practical measures for occupational and environmental health protection.
