Topic: Environmental Exposure and Health Impacts of Tire-Derived Pollutants

Tire production incorporates over 200 types of chemical additives, including vulcanization accelerators, antioxidants, and crosslinking agents. During tire wear on roads, these additives are released along with tire wear particles into road dust, soil, water, and air, enabling their migration across various environmental media. Additionally, rubber products in shopping malls, offices, and homes continuously release additives into indoor environments. Notably, a study published in Science reported that the antioxidant 6PPD can transform into 6PPD-Q upon ozone exposure, causing acute mortality in coho salmon, highlighting the ecological risks of tire-related pollutants. These contaminants can enter ecosystems, the food chain, and the human body through multiple exposure pathways, potentially causing adverse health effects. However, our understanding of the environmental fate and health impacts of tire-derived pollutants remains limited.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to share new findings and insights on the environmental exposure and human health impacts of tire-derived pollutants. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 

1. Analytical methodsfor detecting tire-derived pollutantsin environmental and biological media;

2. Investigation of environmentaland bioticexposure levels;

3. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretionin biota and humans;   

4. Health effects and toxicity studies;

5. Evaluation of exposure pathways using modeling or AI technologies;

6. Risk assessmentand managementstrategies.
