Special Topic Introduction

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and aging is a major risk factor for CVDs. Senescence in the cardiovascular system is intimately involved in cardiac aging. Senescent cells in the heart can spread the senescence state to surrounding cells and cause them to remodel through the secretion of many factors including inflammatory cytokines, a phenomenon termed senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Therapeutic strategies targeting senescence itself or its SASP have developed to combat aging-related cardiovascular diseases. In this special issue, the recent advances in these areas are reviewed and original researches are introduced to find the relevant mechanisms, biomarkers, and therapeutic strategies against aging-related CVDs.
