Special Topic Introduction

This Special Issue aims to bridge the gap between fundamental microdroplet chemistry and advanced engineering systems.

 

Microdroplets have transformed reaction engineering by serving as unique microscale chemical reactors that exhibit accelerated mass transport, ultrafast interfacial kinetics, and non-equilibrium chemical environments. Beyond their established role in microdroplet chemistry, their potential as active electrical double layer (EDL) units is emerging as a central frontier in iontronics and chemical engineering, where electron transfer, ion migration, and interfacial field regulation are intrinsically governed at droplet-based interfaces.

 

This Special Issue focuses on the critical transition from “droplets as reaction vessels” to “droplets as functional building blocks in chemical engineering systems.” We seek contributions that demonstrate technical advances in controlling reaction dynamics, interfacial charge separation, and ion-electron transduction at microdroplet interfaces. The scope includes, but is not limited to, digital microfluidic architectures, dynamic interfacial electric fields, and droplet chemistry. The timing of this issue is particularly compelling, as recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted microfluidics, programmable matter, bioinspired iontronics, and low-power soft electronics are rapidly converging with droplet chemistry. This convergence positions microdroplet-based systems as a promising platform for scalable chemical engineering, intelligent sensing, and adaptive energy technologies.
