Special Issue Introduction
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies globally and stands as the fourth leading cause of worldwide cancer-related mortality. The management of HCC is intricate and poses significant and multifaceted challenges attributable to underlying liver disease and the dynamic landscape of numerous available therapeutic modalities spanning surgery, ablation, catheter-based interventions, external beam radiotherapy, and systemic therapy. Multidisciplinary assessment and management are critical in the successful treatment of HCC. Radiotherapy historically played a limited role in HCC treatment. Although recent advances in radiotherapy technology and an improved understanding of liver radiobiology have increased the range of radiotherapy indications and its role in therapeutic approaches for HCC, there are numerous unresolved questions and topics pertaining to the optimal utilization of radiotherapy in the treatment of HCC. This Special Issue aims to explore the expanding role of radiotherapy in the complex multidisciplinary treatment of HCC and highlight novel technological advancements and emerging translational research in HCC radiotherapy.
