Special Issue Introduction

Liver cancer ranks as the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide, accounting for 780,000 deaths in 2018. Nearly 90% of these cases are due to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viruses have played a major role as aetiological factors for HCC. Vaccination campaigns against Hepatitis B and the availability of effective oral antiviral drugs for both viruses have reduced the rate of viral-related HCC cases. However, a significant increase in the proportion of cases associated with non-viral factors, especially metabolic fatty liver disease (MAFLD), has been reported.

In this Special Issue, attention is paid to non-viral factors for HCC and their potential interaction with hepatitis viruses, including but not limited to:
● Alcohol;
● Smoking;
● Obesity;
● Diabetes;
● NAFLD/NASH.
