Special Topic Introduction

This Special Issue focuses on the sustainable applications of porous materials in addressing critical environmental and energy challenges. Porous materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites, and porous carbons, offer unique advantages such as tunable pore structures, high surface areas, and versatile chemical functionalities. These features enable their effective use in environmentally relevant processes, including carbon capture and utilization, water purification, pollution control, and clean energy storage.

Recent advances have highlighted the potential of porous materials to contribute to decarbonization pathways, resource-efficient separation processes, and environmentally benign catalytic systems. In membrane-based separations, these materials support energy-efficient purification of gases and liquids. In catalysis, they facilitate green chemical transformations and pollutant degradation. In energy systems, they enhance ion transport and interfacial processes for sustainable batteries and supercapacitors.

By emphasizing environmentally responsible design, scalable synthesis, and real-world deployment, this Special Issue aims to bridge fundamental materials research with sustainable technologies, and to accelerate the translation of porous materials into practical solutions for a low-carbon and resource-efficient future.

Special Issue Call for Papers:

This Special Issue invites original research articles and comprehensive reviews on the design, synthesis, and sustainable applications of porous materials addressing environmental and energy-related challenges. Contributions should highlight the role of porous materials in advancing sustainability, including pollution mitigation, carbon management, and clean energy systems.

We welcome studies on porous materials such as MOFs, COFs, zeolites, porous carbons, and hybrid systems, with particular emphasis on their contributions to environmentally responsible technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) using porous materials;

● Water purification, desalination, and pollutant removal;

● Sustainable membrane technologies for energy-efficient separations;

● Green catalysis and environmentally benign chemical processes;

● Porous materials for renewable energy storage and conversion (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen systems);

● Low-carbon and eco-friendly synthesis and processing of porous materials;

● Circular economy approaches, including recyclability and waste valorization;

● Integration of porous materials into scalable,real-world environmental systems.

Interdisciplinary contributions that connect materials science with environmental science, chemical engineering, and sustainability studies are particularly encouraged.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for advancing porous materials as key enablers of sustainable technologies, supporting global efforts toward decarbonization, environmental protection, and resource efficiency.
