Special Issue Introduction

The current Special Issue is dedicated to exploring the fascinating and rapidly evolving field of extracellular vesicles (EVs). We extend our warm invitation to you to contribute your innovative research, which will advance our understanding of the pivotal role of EVs in metabolic disorders.

Metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, are growing global health challenges that affect millions of individuals worldwide. These conditions entail alterations across multiple organs, highlighting the vital importance of inter-organ communication in their pathogenesis. In recent years, the discovery of EVs and their involvement in inter-organ communication has ignited a wave of enthusiasm among scientists and clinicians. These small vesicles, secreted by virtually all cell types, have emerged as key regulators of metabolic homeostasis. Thus, it is evident today that EVs orchestrate a wide array of fundamental biological processes. Of significant note is the increasingly recognized role of EVs in the genesis of metabolic abnormalities, particularly in the etiology of diabetes mellitus and obesity. Nevertheless, the intricate molecular mechanisms through which EVs operate in this context remain unclear.

This issue aims to present novel evidence substantiating the role of EVs in metabolic diseases and how metabolic diseases are risk factors for other diseases. Ultimately, it will address how EVs can be harnessed as diagnostic and therapeutic tools for metabolic diseases. We welcome contributions from diverse fields, fostering a holistic understanding of the complex interplay between EVs and metabolic health.

Join us in unraveling the intricate role of EVs in metabolic diseases, paving the way for innovative therapies and interventions. In this Special Research Topic, we will cover the following topics:
1. EVs as biomarkers for metabolic diseases;
2. EV-mediated communication between gut, liver, pancreas, muscle, adipose tissue, and brain;
3. The role of EVs in insulin resistance and glucose homeostasis;
4. EVs and lipid metabolism in obesity and/or diabetes;
5. EVs in the regulation of inflammation and oxidative stress in metabolic diseases;
6. Implications of EV-induced metabolic disturbances for other diseases;
7. Therapeutic applications of EVs in metabolic disorders.

We cordially invite you to submit your original research articles and reviews to this Special Issue, contributing to the collective knowledge that will shape the future of metabolic disease research.
