Special Topic Introduction
Aging is a complex biological process characterized by the progressive decline of cellular and physiological function. Recent research has highlighted the critical role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in mediating intercellular communication during aging, influencing processes such as senescence, inflammation, and tissue homeostasis. EVs act as both carriers of aging-related signals and promising vehicles for rejuvenation.
This Special Issue brings together cutting-edge studies on EV-mediated mechanisms of aging, including mitochondrial dysfunction, epigenetic alterations, and immune senescence. It also highlights innovative strategies that leverage engineered EVs to deliver pro-regenerative cargo and counteract age-related pathologies. By integrating foundational insights with translational advances, this issue aims to deepen our understanding of EVs as key regulators of aging and to accelerate the development of EV-based anti-aging therapies.
We invite original research and reviews that contribute to this rapidly evolving field.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. Mechanistic insights into EV biogenesis, secretion, and uptake during aging;
2. Roles of EVs in cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and immune modulation;
3. EV-mediated mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration, cardiovascular aging, and metabolic disorders;
4. Circulating EVs as biomarkers of biological age and predictors of age-related pathologies;
5. Therapeutic applications of EVs for tissue rejuvenation and lifespan extension;
6. Engineering EVs for targeted anti-aging interventions.
