Special Issue Introduction
Autonomous driving vehicles (ADVs) are an advanced and complex technology with the potential to reshape mobility by enhancing the safety, accessibility, efficiency, and convenience of automotive transportation. The safety-critical tasks of ADV include perception, prediction, decision, and motion planning of a dynamic environment shared with other vehicles and pedestrians, and their robust control strategy based on the vehicle dynamics. ADVs are being challenged to operate in increasingly complex and dynamic environments such as urban streets, wherein the system dynamics-based control with sufficient performance and reliability are difficult as a result of complex interaction among traffic participants, system uncertainty, disturbance, and so on. Furthermore, formation control of ADVs is one of the typical problems addressed in the context of multi-agent systems (MAS). Formation control of MAS with enough expansivity to meet the requirements of cooperative driving, lane changing, and obstacle avoidance, and ensuring the stability of sub-vehicle in formation can improve traffic efficiency and safety simultaneously.
In this Special Issue, we aim to capture frontier theoretical and experimental research that addresses different challenges and opportunities in the development of critical technologies in autonomous driving vehicles. Topics include, but are not limited to the following issues:
● Multi-sensor fusion and environments dynamics prediction for ADVs;
● Path planning and motion control for ADVs;
● Decision-making ADVs considering interaction;
● Advanced driver assistance systems for ADVs;
● Cooperative formation control of ADVs;
● Complex system modeling for the generalized dynamics;
● Ecological driving strategy of ADVs.
