Special Interview with Journal Editorial Board Member Prof. Shanu Kothari

On July 25, 2022, the Editorial Office of Mini-invasive Surgery (MIS) was very honored to interview journal Editorial Board Member Prof. Shanu Kothari from USC School of Medicine, Greenville, United States. He is Immediate Past President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Chair of Surgery at Prisma Health in Greenville, SC.

In this interview, Prof. Shanu Kothari shares his motivations for being dedicated to taking care of obese patients and engaging in the field of bariatric surgery. Prof. Shanu Kothari, a great scientist who has been working on training residents and fellows practicing in rural and underserved areas, gives constructive advice on the careers of young scholars through this interview.

In addition, Prof. Shanu Kothari shared his main focus on bariatric surgery in the coming research. And as an Editorial Board member of several journals, Prof. Shanu Kothari has very rich experience in journal development, and suggested that Mini-invasive Surgery can focus on hot topics in the field, promote academic exchanges, and promote the development of the discipline through webinars.

Q1 We learned that you have dedicated much of your surgical career to caring for patients with obesity, leading initiatives to improve the care for patients with obesity, and researching obesity-related issues. You have made a great contribution to the field of bariatric surgery. Can you share with us what inspires your continued dedication to this career?

Q2 As a community surgeon, you have been working on training residents and fellows who practice in rural and underserved areas. This is a very great move. Hope more people are as dedicated as you are. What piece of advice you will give to the younger generation pursuing a research career?

Q3 You have a vital role in the development of the bariatric surgery field. Do you and your team have any latest research progress on bariatric surgery? What do you think is the biggest challenge in this field right now?

Q4 At the same time, we also learned that you are an Editor in several journals, and have very rich experience. MIS is focusing on the research of bariatric surgery and has been dedicated to organizing various types of academic activities, such as online webinars to gather experts in the field to discuss cutting-edge issues. As an experienced Editor, do you have any suggestions that can facilitate the journal’s development? And what are the key points for running a journal?

Expert's introduction:

Prof. Shanu N. Kothari, FACS, FASMBS, immediate past President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), currently serves as the Chair of Surgery at Prisma Health in Greenville, SC. He established a minimally invasive bariatric surgery program at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin and served as its Director from 2001 until 2019. He also established a Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery and Advanced Laparoscopy Fellowship through the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation in 2003 and served as the fellowship director until 2019.

Prof.  Kothari served as the senior author for the 2015 and 2014 ASMBS Top Video Award presentations, the 2010 ASMBS Karl Storz Endoscopy America Fellow Scholarship Award, as well as three ASMBS ObesityWeek Top Ten papers. He has over 140 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has served as the Senior Editor of the 2011 and 2021 Surgical Clinics of North America issues dedicated to Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is an Editor of Obesity Care and Bariatric Surgery, an Associate Editor of Evidence-Based Approach to Minimally Invasive Surgery, and an Associate Editor of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases. He is currently the First Vice President of the Fellowship Council and the Immediate Past President of the Southwestern Surgical Congress.
