2023 Annual Report of Chemical Synthesis

The year 2023 has witnessed the huge success of Chemical Synthesis (CS, ISSN: 2769-5247). With the invaluable assistance of the editorial team, authors, reviewers, webinar and conference participants, readers, and editorial staff, CS has accomplished incredible feats in 2023 and received considerable attention from professionals and academicians in relevant fields. Here, the Editorial Office of CS is honored to highlight the journal’s numerous accomplishments in 2023, focusing on the following five perspectives.

1. Indexing

In 2023, CS was successfully included in CAS, J-Gate, and Scopus, as shown in Figure 1, signaling that the journal is moving into a border international platform at a higher rate of growth. Meanwhile, the journal is actively applying for EI and ESCI and is expected to achieve the first Impact Factor (IF) of 10 in 2024! The successful inclusion of the databases signifies that the journal is praised and recognized by more and more experts and scholars, and it also motivates the journal's goal and determination to develop into a stronger and broader arena.

2. Publications

In 2023, CS received 79 submissions and published 47 high-quality articles comprising 4 issues by 259 authors. Figure 2 demonstrates the covers of published issues in 2023. The published articles cover popular topics in chemistry, such as self-assembled nanostructures, high-performance carbide catalysts, loaded noble metal catalysts, selenium nanomaterials, and others. Among 80 corresponding authors, CS is honored to collaborate with a number of academicians, such as Prof. Shigang Sun from Xiamen University, Prof. Weihong Zhu from the East China University of Science and Technology, Prof. Vivian Wing-Wan Yam from the University of Hong Kong, and Prof. Huiying Yang from Singapore University of Technology and Design. Figure 3 demonstrates the H-index distribution of corresponding authors for articles published in 2023.

A total of 274 reviewers from 19 nations or regions contributed significantly to the paper review process in 2023, as illustrated in Figure 4. The development of CS was accelerated by their thorough analysis and constructive suggestions, which substantially raised the value of the publications they reviewed. These reviewers are especially appreciated by the editors of CS for their kind contribution of time and energy.

3. Editorial Board Member and Youth Editorial Board Member

3.1  Newly Promoted Editorial Board Member and Newly Joined Youth Editorial Board Member

In 2023, the Editorial Board of CS expanded, as shown in Figure 5. Prof. Feng Shi from Changzhou University/Jiangsu Normal University is officially promoted to Editorial Board Member, while we also extend a warm welcome to an eminent Youth Editorial Board member, Prof. Yingtang Zhou from Zhejiang Ocean University.

3.2 The First Editorial Board Meeting in 2023

On December 8, 2023, a milestone was achieved as the first offline Editorial Board Meeting of Chemical Synthesis successfully unfolded in Wuhan, China, as shown in Figure 6. Under the adept guidance of Editor-in-Chief Professor Bao-Lian Su, the meeting drew together a distinguished assembly comprising 6 Section Editors, 18 Youth Editorial Board Members, and 5 esteemed members from the Editorial Office. This offline Editorial Board meeting was crucial in deepening mutual understanding and collaboration among all participants. Furthermore, it strategically charted a definitive course for the future development of CS.

4. Highlight Contents

4.1 Webinars

In 2023, CS hosted two successful online webinars, as demonstrated in Figure 7. Chaired by Prof. Haibo Yang from East China Normal University and Prof. Feng Shi from Changzhou University/Jiangsu Normal University as the invited Keynote Speaker, the journal's editorial board member, the webinar was successfully held on August 15, 2023, with the theme of Asymmetric Organic Catalysis, and the number of online viewers on all platforms reached 32,296 times. Another webinar was successfully held on August 17, 2023, Chaired by Prof. Renhua Jin of Kanagawa University, with Prof. Jun Xu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the Guest Speaker. The theme of the webinar was Spectroscopic Study of Heterogeneous Catalytic Materials, which was viewed by more than 45,683 people on various platforms.

4.2 Special Issues

In collaboration with 17 leading experts within the field of chemistry, a total of 13 Special Issues of CS are lunched online in 2023, as shown in Figure 8. The Special Issues cover cutting-edge hot topics such as noble metal-based nanomaterials, catalysts for seawater electrolysis, electrochemical energy storage, carbon in catalysis, rare-earth catalysis and energy applications, functional mesoporous materials, amphiphilic polymers, functional porous frameworks, enzyme and whole-cell catalysis, novel porous organic materials, techniques for catalytic materials characterization, and zeolites and chiral nanostructures.

4.3 2023-Chemical Synthesis Frontier Interdisciplinary Academic Forum

From December 8 to 11, 2023-Chemical Synthesis Frontier Cross Field Forum was successfully concluded in Wuhan, Hubei Province. The conference was organized by CS journal and hosted by Wuhan University of Technology and OAE Publishing Inc. A total of 5 academicians were invited to give keynote speeches, and the total number of offline participants exceeded 400 with 117 attractive presentations. Figure 9 proves the remarkable success of the conference. The topics of the presentations covered the current research hot spots in the field of chemistry, including engineering chemistry, hydrogen energy research, and the design and preparation of zeolite molecular sieve catalytic materials for dual-carbon targets. At the conference, certificates were also awarded to the Editorial Board Members of CS, which further recognized their contribution to the journal’s development.

4.4 Journal Sponsorship Conference

The 9th National Symposium on Multi-Calculation Chemistry of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) was successfully held in Changchun, Jilin Province, May 24-27, 2023, which was co-sponsored by Northeast Normal University and the CCS, and hosted by the Key Laboratory of Multi-Acid and Lattice Materials Chemistry of the Ministry of Education of Northeast Normal University, and CS, as the collaborative journal, sponsored the Best Poster Award of the conference. Prof. Dongyuan Zhao from Fudan University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented the award to the winners of the Best Wall Poster Award sponsored by CS, as shown in Figure 10.

5. Citations

In 2023, CS gained significant recognition among the global academic communities. Figure 11 demonstrates the distribution of citing countries, with more than 235 citations from scholars in 23 countries, according to Dimensions. The manuscripts citing CS-published articles have been featured in a total of 110 journals, with more than 83% indexed in the ESCI database. Figure 12 illustrates the distribution of IFs of these journals, and these data show that the high-quality articles published by CS are recognized by leading experts. As shown in Figure 13, the JCR partitions of the citing journals are mostly located in Q1, which is strong evidence of the high quality of the articles published by CS. Table 1 presents a detailed list of journals with an IF above 20 that cite CS publications.

The opening year of the journal’ development is 2024, during which it will continue to uphold the principle of quality first, preferring a number of high-quality articles, leading the journal to a broader stage of development. CS strives to create a free, equal, and rigorous platform for academic exchanges. We aim to establish the journal as the leading publication in the field of chemistry while also ensuring it holds a special place in the hearts of the Editorial Board, the Youth Editorial Board members, the authors, and the reviewers! Let's look forward to the exciting future of Chemical Synthesis and its continued growth!
