Bio
Dr. Coggins received her PhD at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), Ireland with Prof. Gerard Jennings, for her research on historical heavy metal pollution records in ombrotrophic peatlands located on the west coast of Ireland. She is a Senior Lecturer in Exposure Science at NUIG and a member of the Centre for One Health group at the University’s Ryan Institute. Dr. Coggins is a Chartered member of the British Occupational Hygiene Society and is the Irish representative and board member on the International Energy Agency’s, Technology collaboration Programme - Annex 5, Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC). Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic she has been a member of the National Standards Authority of Ireland, Expert committee on requirements and methods of testing for community face coverings and she currently (2021) serves on the Irish National Expert Group on the Role of Ventilation in Reducing Transmission of COVID-19. Dr. Coggins leads the NUI Galway Exposure Science research team, where her research focuses on characterizing the magnitude of human exposure and exposure pathways for a range of pollutants (including halogenated flame retardants, perfluoroalkyl substances, polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides) across multiple microenvironments as well as evaluating the impact of human exposure or exposure interventions on health. Her research continues to inform the development of both Environmental and Energy policy. She has published over 70 peer reviewed journal articles, text books and reports on topics relevant to both occupational and environmental exposure. Dr. Coggins has made a significant contribution to the field of Exposure Science Education. She has held the role of Programme Director of the NUIG professional accredited postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in Occupational and Environmental Health & Safety. She has held the role of External examiner for numerous research degrees and academic programmes both in Ireland and the UK. As a member of the Education, training and communication working group of the International Society of Exposure Science (ISES) – European Chapter she made a significant contribution of the development of the European Exposure Science Strategy for 2020- 2030 and many initiatives designed to promote the integration of exposure science in academic research and education.
