Bio
Dr Noel Aquilina received his PhD at the University of Birmingham with Prof. Roy M. Harrison (the Queen Elizabeth II Birmingham Centenary Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham and Fellow of the Royal Society) and realized his post-doctorate at University of California, San Francisco with Prof. Neal L. Benowitz (one of the USA's preeminent experts on nicotine research). He was a visiting researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the Energy Technologies Area. He is a Senior Lecturer in Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Malta, Malta and an Affiliate Researcher within the Thirdhand Smoke Consortium of the University of California. Dr Aquilina made a substantial contribution to research in exposure science, in particular on particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) obtained from low-volume samples. He was involved in initial studies linking parent airborne PAHs to their metabolites. His research activities cover: (1) modelling the exposure to various pollutants by applying machine learning algorithms; (2) developing analytical methods to extract tobacco-specific pollutants from different matrices; (3) carrying out measurements in indoor environments and optimize analytical work to improve knowledge of composition of airborne particulate matter.
