Bio
Prof. OJ Okonkwo received his PhD at the Brunel University, UK, and realized his post-doctorate at the same university. He is an Emeritus Professor in Environmental Chemistry at the Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa. Prof. OJ Okonkwo occupied the Rand Water Chair in Organic contaminants in 2013-2018. Prof. Okonkwo received a large number of honors and awards such as Best Senior Researcher of the Year in 2012 and 2016 at Tshwane University of Technology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Chemistry, and Institute of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sciences, Kolkata, UK and India respectively. Prof. OJ Okonkwo made outstanding contribution to Environmental Chemistry, in particular to organochlorinated and brominated emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In 2019, Prof OJ Okonkwo registered a patent on development and fabrication of a preconcentration kit for the rapid analysis of polar compounds followed by gas chromatography. His work in the field of PBDEs in waste stream is world-widely recognized. His research activities cover: (1) brominated, chlorinated and organophosphate flame retardants in different environmental media; (2) use of Deep Eutectic Solvents in the extraction of organophosphate flame retardants from landfill leachates and sediment; (3) use of biomaterial wastes as green adsorbents for removal of organic contaminants from aqueous medium; (4) monitoring of PFASs in various environmental media. He has published more than 150 scientific papers in high impact journals such as STOTEN, Talanta, Environmental Pollution, Waste Management, Hazardous Material., etc.
