A Special Interview with Prof. Daowen Wang
The Journal of Cardiovascular Aging (JCA) recently had the privilege of interviewing Prof. Daowen Wang, a leading cardiologist from Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. Prof. Wang discussed his team's main research focus on fulminant myocarditis, a severe and rapidly progressing clinical condition. He highlighted key challenges in understanding its epidemiology, identifying susceptible patient populations, and achieving early diagnosis.
To address these challenges, his team has been developing sensitive biomarkers, including ST2-based assays, to support early clinical recognition. Prof. Wang also described comprehensive treatment strategies combining mechanical circulatory support, immunomodulatory therapy with corticosteroids and immunoglobulin, and targeted management, which have significantly reduced mortality rates. He emphasized the importance of early intervention, post-discharge follow-up, and ongoing research into new therapeutic targets. Additionally, he noted the growing potential of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data to assist in early diagnosis, reveal patterns in large clinical datasets, and guide personalized treatment strategies. The interview provided valuable insights into both the clinical management and mechanistic understanding of fulminant myocarditis.
Watch the following video for expert insights from Prof. Daowen Wang.
