On July 12, 2024, the Editorial Office of The Journal of Cardiovascular Aging (JCA) conducted an interview with Prof. Georgina M. Ellison-Hughes of King's College London, UK. Prof. Ellison-Hughes discussed her team's research on cardiovascular aging, highlighting that cellular senescence reduces the heart's regenerative capacity and emphasizing the importance of strategies to enhance cardiac repair, including reprogramming aging cells and preventive interventions.

She also shared her motivation to unravel aging mechanisms, identify therapeutic targets and signaling pathways, and develop treatments to delay age-related diseases and improve quality of life. For young researchers, she stressed open-mindedness, vision, perseverance, resilience, and passion in scientific pursuits. This interview provides valuable insights into current directions in cardiac regeneration and aging research, offering guidance and inspiration for early-career scientists.

Watch the following video for expert insights from Prof. Georgina M. Ellison-Hughes:

Interview Questions:

Q1. Could you please briefly introduce your current main research direction and research achievements?
Q2. I'd like to specifically discuss your article published in 2023, titled "Senescent Cells: A Therapeutic Target in Cardiovascular Diseases" published in 2023. It has over 20 times citations since its online publication, which is an excellent achievement for a newly published article. Can you share with us what prompted you to do more research on the subject of aging?
Q3. Looking ahead in the field of cardiovascular aging, what research topics do you think will become hot spots?
Q4. Shifting gears slightly, are there any suggestions for young scholars who are about to enter this field?
Q5. Do you have any suggestions for the future development of JCA?

About Prof. Georgina M. Ellison-Hughes:

Prof. Georgina M. Ellison-Hughes is a Professor of Regenerative Muscle Physiology and Deputy Director of the Centre for Human & Applied Physiological Sciences at King's College London, UK. Her research focuses on tissue-specific stem cells in skeletal and cardiac muscle, investigating mechanisms of muscle repair and regeneration, particularly in aging and disease. She has made pioneering contributions to understanding how modulating cellular senescence can enhance cardiac and skeletal muscle regeneration. Prof. Ellison-Hughes has authored over 70 publications in top journals, cited more than 2,500 times.
