Carbon Footprints' Exclusive Interview with Prof. Manfred Lenzen: Bridging Carbon Knowledge and Action: Why Emissions Persist and What Comes Next?
Carbon Footprints recently hosted an exclusive interview with Prof. Manfred Lenzen on April 24 at 9:00 AM Beijing Time (11:00 AM Sydney Time), to explore why global carbon emissions continue to rise despite decades of scientific progress, and to reflect on how carbon accounting and sustainability research can better inform real-world climate action. The interview was moderated by Prof. Yi Yang from Chongqing University, and featured a one-on-one academic conversation followed by an open and interactive discussion session with participants.
During the interview, Prof. Lenzen and Prof. Yi Yang engaged in an in-depth discussion on several key questions central to contemporary sustainability science, including: (1) despite decades of research and growing awareness, global carbon emissions and footprints continue to rise - what explains this disconnect between knowledge and real-world outcomes; (2) what role academia should play in addressing carbon emissions and bridging the gap between knowledge generation and real-world impact; (3) why consumption-based carbon accounting has not yet translated more effectively into policy or behavioral change; (4) how thinking on carbon accounting and sustainability has evolved over the course of Prof. Lenzen's career in light of persistent global challenges; and (5) what changes are most urgently needed in research, policy, and society to meaningfully reduce global carbon footprints in the future.
Following the structured interview, the session transitioned into a free discussion and Q&A segment, during which participants actively engaged with the speakers on methodological challenges, policy relevance, and future research directions. The exchange was highly interactive and intellectually stimulating, with both speakers and audience contributing to a dynamic and insightful dialogue. The overall atmosphere of the event was warm and engaging, reflecting a strong shared interest in advancing carbon footprint research and strengthening its connection to real-world climate solutions.
The interview underscored both the progress and persistent challenges in carbon accounting and sustainability science, highlighting the urgent need for deeper integration between research insights and policy implementation. Carbon Footprints sincerely thanks Prof. Manfred Lenzen for his inspiring participation, Prof. Yi Yang for his excellent moderation, and all attendees for their valuable engagement and support.
