When we speak of “Orthopedics,” the mind often turns to the operating room - to the precise alignment of a fracture, the smooth glide of a joint replacement, or the intricate repair of a torn ligament. Yet, beneath every successful clinical intervention lies a foundational layer of discovery: the “Science” that asks not just how to fix, but why it works and how we can heal better. Science Orthopedics is born from this essential intersection. As a new international, gold open-access journal, we are dedicated to exploring the dual dimensions of our name. We focus on fundamental research of the bones, joints, and entire musculoskeletal system, purposefully integrating the lenses of biomechanics, materials science, regenerative medicine, computational biology, and engineering. Our mission is to publish research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries to uncover the fundamental mechanisms of disease and pioneer the principles of regeneration and repair.

Focusing on “Orthopedics”: the scientific depth of the musculoskeletal system

Our first dimension delves into the core scientific domains that define modern orthopedic inquiry. We aim to systematically dissect questions that span from molecules to tissues, and from structure to function.

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms form the bedrock. We seek research on the fate, communication, and senescence of cells within bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon, and disc. This includes decoding the signaling pathways - wingless/integrated (Wnt), bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), among others - that govern development, homeostasis, and disease in conditions such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, alongside studies on epigenetic and metabolic regulation.

Biomechanics and Mechanobiology explore the critical dialogue between physical forces and biological response. How do cells sense load through ion channels such as Piezo? How does the mechanical microenvironment guide stem cell fate or drive tissue degeneration? We support work that reveals these principles, connecting the mechanics of trabecular bone or articular cartilage to their biological function.

The promise of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine lies in moving beyond passive implants to active biological solutions. Our scope includes smart, bioactive materials that instruct cell behavior; advanced strategies involving stem cells, exosomes, and gene therapies; and the development of sophisticated in vitro models such as organoids and organ-on-a-chip systems that faithfully mimic living tissues for discovery and screening.

Furthermore, we expand the boundaries of orthopedic science to encompass animal models and translational research that bridge bench and bedside, as well as basic research on systemic conditions such as bone infection, bone tumors, the intricate nerve-musculoskeletal axis, and composite tissue injury healing.

Embracing “Science”: the paradigms of rigorous inquiry

Our second dimension, “Science,” champions the universal principles of rigorous investigation. We are a journal for studies distinguished by their Mechanistic Clarity - work that prioritizes explaining “why” and “how” over merely describing “what.” We advocate for a Multi-scale “Structure-Mechanics-Cell-Tissue-Function” Paradigm, encouraging integrative research that connects phenomena across biological scales.

We actively seek the Deep Integration of Interdisciplinary Methodologies. This includes computational research powered by artificial intelligence and multi-omics, virtual tissue modeling, and the application of advanced techniques such as two-photon microscopy. We also value Technological Innovation in tools and methods, and uphold the highest standards of Data Reproducibility and Openness.

Our commitment and call

Science Orthopedics will operate as a gold open-access journal, ensuring immediate, global dissemination of knowledge. An international board of leading scholars will oversee a rapid, rigorous, and constructive peer-review process. While we celebrate depth in basic and translational science, we maintain a clear focus to avoid purely descriptive clinical reports or preliminary data without mechanistic insight.

The greatest leaps in our field occur when deep clinical insight informs foundational science, and when fundamental discovery illuminates a path to new therapies. Science Orthopedics aims to be the primary platform for this synergy. We invite scientists and clinician-researchers worldwide to submit their most innovative and rigorous work. Join us in defining a new standard for musculoskeletal research and in shaping a future where the science of orthopedics unlocks unprecedented healing.

We invite you to be part of this foundational journey.

Tips on Downloading Citation

This feature enables you to download the bibliographic information (also called citation data, header data, or metadata) for the articles on our site.

Citation Manager File Format

Use the radio buttons to choose how to format the bibliographic data you're harvesting. Several citation manager formats are available, including EndNote and BibTex.

Type of Import

If you have citation management software installed on your computer your Web browser should be able to import metadata directly into your reference database.

Direct Import: When the Direct Import option is selected (the default state), a dialogue box will give you the option to Save or Open the downloaded citation data. Choosing Open will either launch your citation manager or give you a choice of applications with which to use the metadata. The Save option saves the file locally for later use.

Indirect Import: When the Indirect Import option is selected, the metadata is displayed and may be copied and pasted as needed.
