<i>In vitro</i> human gut microbiota fermentation models: opportunities, challenges, and pitfalls

Figure 1. Necessary considerations for the setup of a well-designed in vitro human gut microbiota (HGM) model study. Based on the research question, the most suitable HGM model should be selected and setup with operational parameters that correspond with the features of the target population. Carefully determining the features of the treatment and the organization of replicates will add validity to generated data and facilitate outcome interpretation.
