Bio
Sylvain Merel is an environmental analytical chemist. He obtained a master of environmental engineering in 2006 and a Ph.D. from the French school of public health in 2009. He accumulated international experience working subsequently as a postdoctoral research associate in the department of chemical and environmental engineering at the University of Arizona (USA, 2010-2014), academic research assistant in the environmental analytical chemistry research group at the University of Tübingen (Germany, 2014-2017), and research scientist in the feed safety group at the institute of marine research (Norway, 2017-2019). He is currently a senior research scientist at the French National Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE). His research focuses on the occurrence and fate of emerging contaminants in water, with a particular emphasis on the application of high-resolution mass spectrometry for the identification of transformation products from both natural processes (photodegradation) and water treatment technologies (advanced oxidation processes). He has published 22 peer-reviewed articles in indexed journals as well as 4 book chapters.
