Special Issue Introduction
The escalating issue of marine plastic and microplastic pollution has garnered global attention due to its profound impact on the environment, ecosystems, food security, and human health. Despite ongoing efforts to address this global challenge, there remains a crucial need to bridge existing knowledge gaps about the source, transport, fate, and impacts of plastics and microplastics in oceans. This Special Issue aims to deepen our understanding of this complex challenge and foster scientific collaborations to expedite the development of effective strategies for mitigation and prevention.
Subtopics:
1. Harmonization of methodologies for plastic and microplastic monitoring;
2. Occurrence and characterization of plastic and microplastic in coastal and marine environments;
3. Sources and fluxes of microplastics into the marine environment;
4. Transport and major pathways of microplastics in different environmental matrices;
5. Fate of microplastics in the marine environment;
6. Impact of microplastics on marine ecosystems;
7. Mitigation strategies;
8. Innovative cleanup technologies.
