Special Issue Introduction

Varicose veins, chronic venous disease, superficial thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis/veinous thrombotic events have been subjected to changes in recognition of pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment during the last 10-15 years. New endovenous techniques have awakened large expectations with regard to treatment success and the hope to be followed by fewer complications. The dark side of randomized controlled trials and meta-analysis is the heterogeneity of studies that do not allow a comparison. With this in mind, the scope of this Special Issue is to give an overview of the evidence of risk factors, diagnosis, and therapy of varicose veins including chronic venous disease, superficial thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis/venous thrombotic events. The authors are especially encouraged to give pros and cons to their results and conclusions.
