Topic: Advances in Vasculitis: from Pathogenesis to Novel Therapeutic Strategies
Guest Editor(s)
Special Issue Introduction
Vasculitis is a heterogeneous group of uncommon or rare inflammatory disorders affecting all types of vessels, from the small to the large ones, and characterized by many systemic manifestations and targeting different visceral organs, leading even to life-threatening conditions. Many efforts have been made to gain a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases, and more recently, the introduction of novel targeted therapies has highlighted and confirmed the role of either some cell subtypes, or cytokines, or other humoral components of the immune system in the pathogenesis of some of them. The new era of steroid-sparing or even no steroid regimens has begun and the expected future is to apply novel treatment strategies to tackle both the disease and the dangerous side effects related to the prolonged use of glucocorticoids, therefore generally improving the quality of life of our patients.
